Volume 8, Issue 1 of the European Seed Magazine showcases views on the principle of Essentially Derived Variety (EDV) of the EDV advocacy task force partners, including CIOPORA, ISF, ASTA and Euroseeds. CIOPORA's Secretary General Dr Edgar Krieger explains why treating the priciple of Essentailly Derived Variety (EDV) in terms of plagiarism prevention is an erroneous approach.
"The main purpose of the principle of Essentially Derived Varieties (EDV) in the UPOV 1991 Act is to provide effective protection to original genotypes, i.e., Initial Varieties (IV), resulting from crossing and selection. At the time of the adoption of the UPOV 1991 Act, the EDV principle was meant to include mutants, GMO’s and varieties resulting from repeated backcrossing in the scope of protection of their IV..."
